<br>It is possible to repacking the stuffing box while in the water. After unscrewing the packing nut from the shaft log, wrap a rag or strip of cloth around the shaft.  Snug it up against the open shaft log and secure with a hose clamp or ziptie.  Any water that enters the boat will be easily handled by the bilge pump.
