Pros and Cons of my furling mainsail. |
| COMMENTS |
We sail local waters of the Gulf Islands in British
Columbia where we live. We have installed Furuno Radar as well as
the other usual electronic toys (e.g. Loran, hand held VHF). We also
had a Furling mainsail installed at the time of purchase. We have
taken the boat as far up the B C Coast as Bella Bella. This took us
a total of 9 weeks to complete. I like the ease this boat is to handle
single handed as I spend quite a bit of time sailing by myself on
day sails. |

Owned a 1988 Catalina 30 for 16 years. Did
all maintance on it...
Nearly all aspects of my catalina 34 including the many upgrades I
have supervised or done myself... |
| Comments |
This is my fourth Catalina,,22, 27, 30, and Now the
Cat 34...It sails much better then any of the others..and has the
new eliptical rudder which makes a huge difference ... it has a very
neutral rudder...I use a smaller wheel when makeing long offshore
trips..because it's easier for the crew to get around the wheel &
the autopilot steers ...I also use a 42 inch wheel while crusing here
on Pensacola Bay... |

| COMMENTS |
I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada...so it's a long
10 hour commute to the boat by car or a one hour flight. Because of
this I don't get out there every weekend. I used to go out Winter
and Summer but the last couple of years I've become a bit of a fair
weather sailor, putting the boat away the end of October and recommissioning
the first of April. I sail throughout the San Juan Islands and into
northern Puget Sound. I've got an Apelco 8 mile radar, dinghy davits,
feathering prop, all Autohelm instruments -- depth, speed, autopilot
(4000 and the remote multi-function head (a real jewel --lots of good
information), and Espar heating. I have a cruising spinnaker with
snuffer as well as the 150% genoa with roller furling and the standard
Catalina main with an extra reef (I blew the top 4 sail slides out
last May in 40 knot winds) that I put in last Summer. Oh yeah, most
important I've got a dodger which I would not be without. Also have
a wing keel and my most recent upgrade was the chain gypsy for my
standard windlass that I never used in the 5 years previously. It
was a bit costly but it was the best thing I've put on my boat in
the last 2 years. |
