Wildflecken is a German name, meaning wild
place or wild spot. It is the name of the German village (and U.S.
Army post) where my wife and I met and married. The original Wildflecken
was a pretty wild place, and now Wildflecken II can be a little wild
with the occasional squall line. |

I also

She (originally "Bethany") was a bit of a
cosmetic mess when I bought her in the Fall of 2003. In addition to
some minor engine repairs (e.g., SS exhaust manifold), I have swapped
out the OEM fixed two-blade Michigan Sailor prop for a three-blade
Flex-O-Fold. I've also replaced the canvas (above and interior), upgraded
to cowl vents to beautiful SS low-profile vents, stripped and refinished
the exterior teak and the cabin sole (used "Ultimate Sole inside
-great stuff), replaced the OEM sails with laminate beauties from
Kappa Sails. Upgraded the bilge pump to an integrated Rule 1500 (i.e.,
no separate water-level float switch). Replaced the interior lights
with low-voltage LEDs, except for the fluorescents, which I upgraded
to new double-tube versions. Replaced the speedlog, depth sounder,
and wind instruments with Raymarine ST-60s. Added a Garhauer rigid
vang and EZ-Glide genoa cars as well as upgraded the traveller. I
replaced the original Hood continuous line furler with a Harken. Replaced
the outhaul blocks inside the boom and ran the outhaul back to cockpit.
In order to do that I replaced the starboard deck organizer to handle
four leads and upgraded the line clutches on both sides to Lewmar
D2s (three on the port and two twins on the starboard). Spartited
the mast partners (way better than wedges). Replaced the lens on the
forward hatch. |
| Planned Upgrades |
I'm in the process of upgrading the rudder to the new
eliptical rudder (just ordered in Nov. 2006 from CY). I'm going to
replace my aged Autohelm 4000 wheelpilot with a below-decks model
(probably Raymarine to mate with the Raymarine Seatalk network for
the other instruments). I'm going to install the Snake River tank
monitor system for the holding tank and water tanks. Upgrade the battery
charger to a Xantrex True-Charge. Refinish the interior teak. Will
replace the original engine panel and will add a starter battery next
to the engine as well as a galvanic isolater to the shorepower line.
Will replace the galley faucet with one that has a pull-out strayer,
and, maybe, replace the sink with a nice shiny new one. Will eventually
replace the lenses on the rest of the ports. Would love to figure
out what to do about the large deadlights; they're the only thing
I consider truly ugly on the boat (from the outside... not very nautical).
Importantly, added martini glasses to the galley cupboard and Grey
Goose to the freezer ;) |

| How Boat Was Named |
Named after my wife, Rose ("Atlantic Rose").
It's my way of being with her, since she doesn't really enjoy sailing. |
| Comments |
After three years of owning a C34, I continue to be
amazed at how great this boat is. I frequently sail with other friends
on other larger boats (especially Beneteaus), and always come back
to this one as a one-in-a-million. Frank and Gerry really got this
one right. |

I cruise, today, on the waters of Western
Florida and Florida Keys. I will be taking the boat to Kentucky Lake
(Tennessee River) and Barkley Lake (Cumberland River) in 2010. I have
cruised the East Coast, from Baltimore, MD to Florida and Bahamas
between the years of 1998 and 2003.
I have made several improvements to my C34, Heart Freedom 20, Ample
124A Alternator w/3 stage Reg, two 8D Gel Cells, Nav. Station Shelf,
Cedar Lined V-Berth locker, moved drawer under Sink to V-Berth, Added
Microwave under sink, Replumbed sink and fresh water controls/pump
under sink, added raw water deck wash for anchor well, added access
door in head behind toilet bowl, installed home made accumulator tank,
and a variety of other improvements.
In 2008 replaced old Seaward 5# Propane locker with new 10# Aluminum
tank and locker (from Seaward). |
