At times why I press the starter button,
nothing happens. Pressing the button a second time gets the engine
started. I believe this is due to high resistance in the ground cable
between the battery and the engine. Among the first items I intend
to do is to measure the resistance in the cable, and if it is high,
to replace it. |
| Longest/Notable Voyage |
Since we purchased this boat this past spring
which was very wet here in the northeast, there was considerable delay
in moving the boat from a yard near the Rhode Island border to Port
Jefferson located on Long Island New York's north shore.
As a result of electrical problems uncovered just before we started
out, we had about a six hour delay before we could start our voyage.
Since it was almost mid afternoon when we started, once we cleared
the breakwater at Stonington Harbor, we motor sailed through Fishers
Island Sound, past Mystic and New London, CT.
The skies were getting cloudy again at about 1800 hours, and after
a long and frustrating day, we decided to stop in Old Saybrook, CT
for the night.
When we were unable to rouse anyone at either marina near the mouth
of the Connecticut River, we decided to tie up to the gas dock at
one of them. The plan was to resume our journey before dawn to catch
the tide and beat the bad weather that was forecast.
The bad weather arrived prematurely, and we decided to leave Surprise
at a Yacht Club in Old Saybrook and return the following weekend.
When we returned the following Saturday, we found Surprise still securely
attached to the mooring, but when we tried to move away from the mooring,
we found Surprise was resting in the mud.
After a kind soul in a neighboring boat towed us out to deeper water,
we resumed our journey. Severe weather was forecast for late in the
day, and although the wind direction was not particularly helpful,
the tide was. And so we motored about 40 miles from Old Saybrook to
Port Jefferson, and arrived just as the heavy rain was beginning.
While having dinner in a nearby restaurant later that evening, the
storm grew so violent that the electricity in POrt Jefferson was cut
off for about two hours.
It is an interesting experience to dine in a restuarant with only
candle light, and not hot coffee because the urn is electrically operated. |

Am having considerable problems with wooden keelsole,
I'm finding it impossible to get this wood dry (even after repairing
the crack at the forward end of the keel hull join) A further aggravation
is the rainwater that comes down the mast and collects in the bilge,
and covers a section of the wood that I exposed to identify the problem
in the first place. Has anyone else had this problem, if so
I would appreciate hearing from them. |
