New bow roller with 351b Delta Anchor
Comments Sailing with young children, that's our speciality. Samantha 7 and Zach 4. Because of this we spend alot of time on the hook. We usually spend most weekends at Angel I. in the S.F. Bay but also cruise the bay and Delta. My longest trip was from L.A. to S.F. The boat can take a real beating, don't worry. As far as upgrades I couldn't live without. 1. A big anchor roller, 2. High output alternator and 3. A TV with a Nintendo (it enables me to get some quality cocktail time in).

Dodger and bimini with 80w solar panel mounted on top of bimini. Two 11 lb propane bottles were mounted on stern rail to save storage in cockpit lockers.
Planned Upgrades Anchor windless and another solar panel.

How Boat Was Named Have been a symphony musician for now over 40 years and connotations of "Symphony" seemed appropriate.
Comments This is our 4th Catalina and in a a short time we will have owned our "34" for 14 years. It has been a great boat for us and we even lived aboard for 2 1/2 years while taking a year off from work and relocating to Florida.

Cetol on teak (works great), replaced water heater, wiring harness upgrade, epoxy coated bottom, dripless packing, Drivesaver flexible coupling, rebed ports, lazy jacks, single line reefing, battery charger, refrigeration (water cooled), replace lifelines (and crimp), rebed stanchions (prior owner had gloobed clear silicon around the bases), rebed chain plates, replace head, rebed steering column
Planned Upgrades Replace black plastic sliding doors. Add overhead shelf with microwave. Access hatch to v-berth.
Longest/Notable Voyage Night sail from St. Michaels MD to Herring Bay after spending day at Wooden Boat Show. Wind built to 25 knots with 4 foot waves. Fortunately, I had reefed prior to heading out into open Bay. Glorious sailing, but wasn't appreciated by the first mate!

252 Too Much Fun !! -- Ventura, CA

Owner (email) Doug Farrell / Diane Shankwiler (drdouguscsd*spam-no-more*msn.com)
Hull Number 252
Year 1987
Marina or Mooring location Ventura
Rig Tall
Keel Fin
Date Purchased May 1998
Upgrades Stripped bottom gelcoat, dried the hull (3 months on the hard), treated blisters, and applied new barrier coating. Replaced water heater and almost every hose in the bilge and head, and installed a new toilet. Also replaced the water tank control valves with lever-type valves. Removed and re-painted the mast and replaced standing rigging. Raised the back-stay splitter for better access when using the stern ladder. Installed a 44" wheel. Replaced and re-organized running rigging, and fabricated and installed mounting pedestals for halyard, topping lift, and reefing line clutches. Added spinnaker pole, line-control whisker pole and reaching strut. Re-built stern pulpit adding port and starboard pulpit seats, and radar post with outboard motor crain, and radio and GPS antennae mounts. Installed new life lines. Replaced dodger and canvas covers. Replaced main cabin and galley lights with flourescent white/red fixtures. Installed galvanic isolater, Heart charger-inverter, converted to gel batteries, added two batteries (now gives us 400 amp hours in 2 banks), installed Link 2000, and rebuilt electrical pannel. Installed Stereo AM/FM/CD with 10 CD changer. Added Raytheon radar, EPIRB, Autohelm pedestal-mounted autopilot, Garmin GPS, and KVH Quadro instruments. Installed Garhauer adjustable jib cars, mounted heavier Garhauer(Cat 42) traveler, and installed Garhauer boom vang. Replaced engine control panel. Installed oversized engine heat exchanger, larger raw-water strainer, SS prop shaft, and 3-bladed feathering prop. Built cradles under the V-berth for spare CNG and Scuba tanks (removed the drawer) and installed custom V-berth mattress. Replaced forward fiberglass hatch with lexan hatch for better V-berth light. Added anchor road that is end-spliced to 70' of high strength chain attached to a Fortress FX-23 anchor. Enlarged anchor locker and reinforced bow toerail to support later addition of anchor windless. (A confession here: part of the reason for enlarging the anchor well was to access and repair a hole in the bow from a collison with another raceboat. Honest, we were on starboard!)
Planned Upgrades Planning to install a pair of secondary winches for the cockpit (Lewmar #43's already purchased). Want to replace the original Bowmar portlights with Lewmar non-opening portlights (I hate leaks!) Also planning to replace the cabin side windows with new Lexan that's bedded in place (ditto leaks!). Need to replace the articulated light fixtures with newer energy efficient lights. Would like to replace the rudder with an elliptical one (this will probably envolve heavy negotiation with Diane). Also would love to procure an 8-person coastal survival raft (will also require negotiation with spouse).
Longest/Notable Voyage Several Newport to Ensenada Races (125 miles)which for us is a 90 mile delivery to the race area. A few Santa Barbara to King Harbor races (90 miles) with about a 60 mile delivery. Several cruises to Catalina Island which is about a 60 mile trip from Ventura.

How Boat Was Named You'll have to meet Diane to fully understand!
Comments We had quite a bit of frustration with the boat initially, but most of that was the result of neglect on the part of the original owner. Finally, this year, I think I can say I'm happy with how the mechanical aspects of the boat are. I'd like our sailing performance to be better but I think much of that is a question of sailing the boat more than we have, and having changed some of the rig settings. It's hard to race and cruise with the same boat, particularly when the boat wasn't designed for racing. All things considered, we're pretty happy with this boat now and I'd predict we'll have it for a long time.

Need information about I would like to outfit the boat for extended cruising to Mexico in the future. Any suggestions?
Longest/notable voyage A two week trip to Bahia Puntaderos which is south of Ensenada, Mexico. It was about a 350 mile round trip voyage. Highlights include- diving with sea lions at Todos Santos, visiting seagull rookery on the island, trading beer for lobsters with the local fishing fleet, catching lots of fish. Lowlight was only one- the kelp flies swarmed us at Todos Santos anchorage!!
Comments I use the boat mostly for coastal cruising to the Channel Islands,   ie: Catalina, etc. I have also raced several times to Ensenada in  the cruising class.I am interested in cabin upgrades in general and  am always looking to add to my sail inventory.

Planning trip to Abacos May 98. Race with the Amelia Island Sail Club. Just replaced main Dec 97 so anxious to see any improvement! Love the boat, but I know it can go faster than I've gotten it to go! Installed Dutchman system along with new main. Feel the boat is a super cruiser for 4 -- but I can't seem to do very well racing PHRF of 153.
