My wife and I could not agree on an appropriate
name as this was our
third sailboat and we both had strong feelings that the name had to
"fit". Our grandson came sailing with us one of our first
weekends and
he immediately said this is like "Puff, the magic dragon's boat".
It is
accented in forest green and Puff was a favorite story of his. Given
that all sailors are looking for that energy lift that a good strong
puff will provide, we quickly agreed that "Puff" she would
be. We added
a graphic of a dragon and the name Puff to both sides of the boat.
We
are constantly being complemented about the name and graphic. It is
one
that everyone seems to remember. |

She came well equipped: North Sails: Roller 135 Jib, Full Bat. Main, Lazy
Jack, Dingy Davits, Refrigeration, 3-blade prop (very nice when Superior gets grumpy),
Halon auto fire extinguishing system, autohelm 3000 etc. We sailed last year to see what
worked, what didn't. The batteries were shot/not enough reserve and poor charging equip.
This year Upgraded batteries to Gel Cells. The boat had one grp24 for the fridge, and 2
grp31's - 1 for each bank. I added another group 31 to bank #2 so that the house bank
draws from two parrallel group 31's for better functionality. I will use the other bank
for starting/emerg.
Also replaced the existing ferro-res. charger with Statpower 20+ 3bank 4stage shorecharger
- wow what a difference. (I used one of these on the last boat with HUGE improvement in
electrical power management)
In process of replacing existing internally regulated alternator with a heart interface
regulator and higher output alternator. (Thank you James Moe #976 for your help!!!)
The idea is to have a week-end's worth of usable power stored with minimal time charging
away, like just during the saturday morning departure from anchor. |
| Planned Upgrades |
Replace the Dodger add a Bimini |

Our first voyage alone on the STARGAZER was a beutiful sunny day out of
Port Superior at Bayfield WI. The former owner informed us thatthe stargazer in light to
medium winds was a dream to sail with just the Genoa flying. We spent the first two hours
on a port tack towards and into the beutiful Apostle Islands. We reach a top cruising
speed of 7.4K. After sailing a Catalina 25 for 20 plus years, this attainable speed and
ease of handling the STARGAZER with just the GENOA flying was to say the least an
exhilerating and heady experience. This one has been talked over and retold several times
now that the ice is on the lakes here in MN.Spring cannot come too soon this year. |

We have a 18 hp Universal DSL.On our last sail we motored the last 10 miles into heavy
winds and seas, upon entering our slip area I went to idle and then reverse to slow
speed, when I started to add power the engine died and was very difficult to restart. The
batteries had ample power but the engine turned over with a lot of drag. This happened the
second time when I went from reverse to forward. Afterward in the slip it ran easily and
idled normal.Any ideas as to why this stalling problem occured. We have found this engine
to be very cold blooded in starting,is this normal for this model make and model engine? |

How do you fix the keel to hull crack? |
| Comments |
Like most 34 owners, we've added lots of personal touches to the boat;
most fall into the minor category. Recently added a set of Dinghy Davits which turned out
exceptionally well. Can't seem to solve the perennial problem of the keel to hull seam
always wanting to open up just a bit at the forward edge when she's out and blocked for
the winter. Although we've had no great and long adventures, we've had some of the most
enjoyable days and nights in our lives on Star, most of the time not venturing more than
10-15 miles from home port. We're not racers by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a
lot of fun to scoot past others on the same run when we feel inclined to work a bit at the
trim; and Star seems to like it too! |

Will be re-painting the mast/boom in the spring, it's currently dark-blue
Imron (ugh). Any advice welcome. Also welcome any advice on selection of roller/furler
(leaning to Hood SD), instruments (leaning to Brunton/Nexus), re-fairing the keel (another
must-do task) and conditioning gelcoat (Island Girl vs PolyGlow vs NewGlassII). |

75 is a lightly-used Lake Ontario boat. There's lots to do to get
it Bristol, but mostly it's been ignored the last few years. It'll keep me
busy over the winter, I'm looking fwd to the spring. |
