C34 Owners Mailing List
To foster discussion regarding the technical and other issues of C34
ownership, please join the Catalina 34 Owners Mailing List.
Mission. The C34 owner's mailing list is devoted strictly to technical
and operational issues of the Catalina 34, and to serve as a means of notifying C34
owners of updates to the C34 website. It is intended for the exclusive, non-commercial
use of Catalina 34 owners or prospective owners. The list volume is light and always
on-topic.
Privacy. To prevent spammers from harvesting the list and
sending you junk mail, the list server does not automatically disclose the list
of e-mail addresses (that is, the "who" command is disabled). A
mailing list is, however, essentially a public forum. By sending a message
to the list, you are sending to some unknown number of strangers.
How mailing lists work. A list server enables a mailing list.
A computer program running on an Internet-connected computer, a list server works
automatically, handling the tasks of receiving messages and sending out duplicates to
everyone on the mailing list. The list server also handles subscriptions and other
functions.
Every mailing list has two addresses, a list server address
and a list address. To handle subscriptions and unsubscriptions, you send e-mail
to the list server's address (majordomo@c34.org
).
To send mail to the mailing list, you use the list address (list@c34.org).
Learn how to route incoming mail to folders. If you feel that the
incoming messages interfere with your ability to notice important e-mail messages, you can
write filters to route incoming mail from this list to a mailing list folder. The
messages won't appear until you open the folder. In this way, you can read the mailing
list when you have time to do so; at other times, it isn't in your face. The most recent
Netscape and Microsoft browsers include these capabilities. For this reason, I strongly
recommend that you use Microsoft Outlook Express (the e-mail program included with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
and higher) or Netscape
Messenger (the e-mail program included with Netscape Communicator
4.0 and higher). Here are instructions for both programs.
Archives. This list server is maintaining an archive of messages
sent to the list. The details of how to make that archive available to
list owners have not been worked out yet.
Subscribing
You subscribe to the list by sending a simple e-mail message to the list server. Please
do not send this message to the list itself. The list server and the mailing list have
different e-mail addresses.
To subscribe to the new list, send mail to majordomo@c34.org
in the body of the message, type
subscribe c34
majordomo@ripley will send you a message that includes a command you will
have to send back. This is a security measure that prevents hackers
from subscribing people to mailing lists without their knowledge.
Just reply and send back the command that it tells you, and you
will be added to the list. When
your subscription is confirmed, you will get another message. Please
read it. The more interesting stuff is near the end. That's
all there is to it.
Unsubscribing
Like subscribing, unsubscribing requires sending a message to the list server. Please
do not send unsubscribe requests to the mailing list or the list maintainer unless you
have already attempted to unsubscribe following these directions. (If you closed the
e-mail account from which you subscribed, you will need the list maintainer's help to
unsubscribe -- if that's the case, Mark
Sienkiewicz the list maintainer and associate webmaster,
will be happy to help.)
If you would like to unsubscribe to the mailing list,
- Start a new e-mail message (with a blank subject line).
- Address the letter to majordomo@c34.org
Important: In the body of the message, type
unsubscribe c34
You will receive a confirmation if you have unsubscribed successfully.
Contributing
To contribute to the C34 mailing list, send e-mail to
list@c34.org
Please note that every subscriber will receive a copy of your message. The list
maintainer reserves the right to deny subscriptions to individuals who post off-topic
messages (e.g., completely off-topic discussions of religion, politics, personal
watercraft, use of guns while cruising, etc.).
