Winter 2008 Meeting Notes - February 9th
Fellow Puget Sound C34 owners –
To start off, I’d like to thank Ray & Julia Meek for hosting Saturday’s meeting and providing food and beverages at their Redmond office. I’d also like to thank Ray for taking notes so I didn’t need to rely on my memory to write this summary.
Seven boats were represented. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that all three C34 owners from D dock at Anacortes Marina attended.

We started the meeting picking prospective sites and dates for our spring and fall rendezvous. We tried to avoid major holiday weekends, while still aiming for favorable weather. As these dates approach, we’ll try to organize possibly a theme and probably some sort of potluck.
Spring Rendezvous
May 17th and 18th, Coronet Bay Marina at Deception Pass, Whidbey Island

Fall Rendezvous

Annual meeting
We found last weekend worked well for people, so our next tentative annual shore-side planning meeting will be the weekend preceding President’s day in February 2009. I don’t think this precludes us doing more. I could envision getting together in the late fall for a party with a side discussion on ground tackle tips and adventures.
Cruising
Next on the agenda was a discussion on Princess Louisa Inlet, up the Sunshine Coast of B.C. http://www.princesslouisa.bc.ca/ Bruce & Judy Waddell brought pictures from their trips in 2000 & 2001 (I think). They shared information on traversing Malibu Rapids and anchoring spots. Jack Hutteball researched the currents in July and found the second week of the month to have the most favorable times and velocities. He and Ruth are planning a three week cruise to the inlet leaving around the first of July. We’re planning on leaving about the 6th and will try to catch up with them. The Waddell’s, Clay’s and Meek’s may also try to get up there as well. The Davison’s have the whole month of July slated for cruising and are going to try to head farther north to the Broughtons and beyond. (Randy, we expect pictures!!)
Boat improvements
Jack H. has been seen on the C34 forum researching cabin heat options. Portable electric heats are nice, but with the weather hanging around forty degrees, 1500 watts doesn’t make much headway. A diesel cabin heater sure helps extend the cruising season and keeps the crew in a better mood. Bulkhead units seem rather risky while underway, running ducting for a forced air unit is a little challenging. There was a write-up in the November 2007 Mainsheet about installing an Espar hydronic unit. Tom Clay also self-installed the Espar hydronic unit. He brought many pictures for Jack showing the installation on the rear port lazarette on his 2006 C34. He used ¾” CPVC to route the coolant to two Red Dot radiator/fan units. He has one installed under the head sink with ducting to the companion way and head(?), the other is in the port storage compartment forward of the holding tank. He’s disconnected the hot water tank from the engine fresh water loop and added that to the diesel heater loop to allow hot water heating at anchor.
Other business and comments
I encourage everyone to leverage the resources of the C34 International Organization website and forums. http://www.c34.org/ I’d like to add more content to our Fleet 5 pages http://www.c34.org/fleet5/Fleet5.htm , especially pictures! Any comments on making the site more useful are appreciated. Please bear with my learning web publishing.
Also, please take advantage of the Fleet 5 forum to post any weekend plans you have. It’s always nice to see another C34.
Fair Winds!
