Background: Since 1989, Fleet One has rewarded the winner of an annual mid-winter racing series with a "Racer of the Year" (ROTY) keeper trophy and place on our beautiful perpetual trophy. The perpetual has recently been renamed the Dave Davis Perpetual Racer of the Year Trophy to honor Dave's longstanding contributions to both the local and international C-34 organizations. These series have included the Encinal YC Jack Frost Series, SBYC mid-winters, and most recently the GGYC mid-winters. The ROTY awards have been presented at the Fleet One Annual Dinner at the beginning of the year following the completion of the qualifying mid-winter race series. However, lost in this process was the fact that our racers have raced in summer series and other competitions since 1995 in one form or another. These other series have not counted in the ROTY award process, but occasionally led to separate award plaques for the winners at the Annual Dinner. New Competition Guidelines: Given that Fleet One racers have been consistently participating in a spring/summer series and occasionally the C-34 Nationals (now adding the Fleet One Annual Regatta in September 2003) we are changing the ROTY award criteria. Specifically, we will combine all the results from all series raced in a given racing season (from the first mid-winter race series to the last series run in the summer or fall) to determine the ROTY winner. This will incent the Fleet's skippers to participate in all the racing instead of just one series. Scoring Scheme: The winner of the ROTY will be the skipper with the best combined results from all series raced in a season. Series results will be according to the series sponsors' scoring system with their throw out rules followed. Since not all Fleet One skippers uniformly compete in all series, those not competing will receive a score of total boats in each series plus 2 points. (DNC equivalent of most series' scoring systems) Season total scoring ties would be broken in favor of the most 1st places, then 2nd places, and so on until a winner is derived. ROTY series scored will only be those sanctioned/approved by Fleet One Race Chairman and the Board of Directors. Some years it may only include one mid-winter series, and in others 3-4 sanctioned series. In the 2001/2002 racing season, competition would have included the GGYC Mid-winters, the Inter-club summer series and the C-34 National Regatta in late September. The Awards: The skipper with the best racing results for a season per the formula above will have his or her boat name and year won engraved on the Dave Davis Perpetual Racer of the Year trophy. As before, they keep the perpetual until the following year's winner is announced. In addition, they will receive a suitable "keeper" trophy to recognize the winning performance that earned them the Dave Davis Perpetual.
